Themarq on Radiohead’s “Give Up The Ghost” (From The King of Limbs: Live from the Basement, 2011)

I’ve been a fan of Radiohead but I wasn’t too keen on The King Of Limbs especially after seeing the “Lotus Flower” video. I played my CD while doing something else and my response to questions about the album was lukewarm. I was disappointed that I was disappointed. But I knew better than to force the issue.

Last week, I returned to my old work, although in a new office, after 18 months of absence. A colleague immediately asked for my stash of records and I was more than eager to share what I’ve accumulated last year. Radiohead wasn’t one of them.

Still adjusting to the corporate world and trying to make sense of things, I’ve been busy on other matters, including one that has kept me up at night or otherwise left my stomach churning. At one point, I had a meeting that took three hours. As I joined the daily grind in EDSA, a sudden urge for solitude came over me. I turned off the radio and the phone and just focused on driving. And the air coming out of the vent.

It took another hour before I left that zone. The next thing I heard was Thom Yorke. “Codex,” and “Lotus Flower,” and “Separator.” But I kept going back to this song. That slow, haunting intro. The rhythm of his repetitive words. The final stretch of 20 seconds that doesn’t want to end.

Finally, I got it.

I didn’t want the traffic to end.

Themarq tried out for her school glee club once. She is now a lawyer.
